Rite Aid has declared its intention to shutter an additional 53 store locations, which adds to the approximately 200 closures initiated since the company entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last year.

The drugstore chain, based in Philadelphia, has experienced annual financial losses for multiple consecutive years. It also confronts legal challenges similar to those faced by its competitors, particularly related to opioid prescription liabilities. Among its legal settlements, Rite Aid agreed last year to a deal with West Virginia, promising up to $30 million in payments.

The company first disclosed plans to close over 150 stores in 15 states shortly after filing for bankruptcy protection in mid-October. This was followed by an announcement in late November about shutting down another 31 locations. Additional closures occurred earlier this year. Recent court documents have provided a detailed list of store closures in California, although no specific timeline for these closures was outlined. One store has confirmed that its pharmacy operations will cease by the end of April, with the entire store expected to close in May.
